Swansea RFC were saddened to hear that former “All White” Steve Ellsworthy passed away on New Year’s Eve.
Steve’s association with Swansea RFC went back to his playing days in the Swansea Youth teams of the mid 1970s. Known by team mates as “Monty”, Steve was a large man for a hooker and played alongside Keith Colclough in the Swansea Youth XV (16-19 yr olds). Steve received the Dewi Bebb Ffyddlondeb (fidelity or loyalty) Award for the 1975-76 season.
Steve also went on to play for the Swansea Athletic and was an integral part of the team that toured to Benidorm in 1977-78 and enjoyed tours with the Athletic to St Ives and matches against the Bohemians that preceded the 1st Xv encounters with the Barbarians. he also received an award as Player of the season whilst with the Athletic.
Steve went on to a long association with Mumbles RFC, who he coached and served on the committee. keith Colclough has recalled that Steve was a good friend and team mate that no one had a bad word against. he was in his early sixties and all at St Helen’s sympathise with Steve’s family at this difficult time.
