Continuing with our preseason announcements, Swansea RFC are pleased to announce the signings of hookers, Owen Thomas and Matthew Moore.
Owen Thomas joins the Swansea RFC set up following two seasons at Bridgend Ravens. His previous rugby experience includes playing for Tata Steel and his home club, Pyle RFC, whilst a work placement in Doha also saw him playing in the West Asian Premiership with Doha RFC for a year. Accustomed to both rugby codes, Owen played in the Welsh Rugby League at under 16s and 18s before returning to union.
The 25-year-old primary school teacher said, “The new opportunity to be part of Swansea RFC is a really exciting prospect. There’s a good group bunch of boys here and a knowledgeable group of coaches which I’m looking forward to training under as well as playing on one of the finer pitches in the league.”
Twenty-two-year-old Matthew Moore from Llanelli joins the Swansea RFC squad following four seasons with Llandovery RFC, making 57 appearances. Prior to this, Moore spent time with Llanelli RFC, and Felinfoel RFC, and was actively involved with the Coleg Sir Gar rugby set up. Regionally, Matthew has represented the Scarlets at under 16 and under 18, the Scarlets A team in 2017/18, and Wales u16s.
On his move to Swansea, Moore commented, “I’ve really enjoyed my time at Llandovery but am looking forward to a new challenge with The Whites and playing with a new group of boys. The streamlined league should make for some interesting and vital fixtures to finish in the top 6 and I’m eager to see what’s in store for the season.”
Head coach, Hugh Gustafon said, “Owen is a very strong ball carrier and an abrasive player, so we are looking forward to seeing him in a Whites jersey, while Matthew is an experienced Premiership hooker with a high work rate and this should create good completion between our hookers.”
