Swansea forward Walter Rice Evans was born 10th September 1863 in Neath and educated at Cowbridge Grammar School, going on to Jesus College Oxford in the footsteps of many Welsh students of influential families of the day, where he gained a blue, playing for Oxford University RFC in 1890. He made his Swansea debut in November of 1888 after moving from Neath rugby Club that year. He made an immediate impact with his physicality and mobility and was marked for future honours. He gained three Welsh caps, the first of which was against Scotland on 1st February 1890. He played for Wales against both England and Scotland in the 1891 Championship. Evans also played London Welsh. He was a landowner mainly in the Neath/Briton Ferry area. Walter Rice Evans died on 9th June 1909.
