John Samuel was born in Swansea in 1868 and played as a forward for Swansea, making his debut in 1891. He played, along with his brother David (qv) in the unofficial Championship of Britain match between Swansea and English club Blackheath (Easter Monday 1891), both sides having finished as Premiers in their leagues. Swansea won by 1 goal, 1 try and 5 minors to a try. John Samuel won one cap for Wales in the international against Ireland in 1891, playing alongside his brother David. John Samuel was a life deacon at the Mansleton Congregational Church and also a great pigeon fancier. He died on 23rd December 1947.
