St Helen’s redevelopment would secure All Whites future at iconic home “for many years to come”
Plans to transform St Helen’s into a modern, 21st century sports venue have been hailed by Swansea RFC as “fantastic news” that would secure the club’s future at their historic seafront home “for many years to come”.
The Ospreys recently confirmed their plans to return to St Helen’s, one of their two home grounds in their formative early years, having reached a conditional agreement with Swansea Council to invest into the seafront venue.
Phase one of the proposed development would see the installation of a new and relocated 4G pitch, refurbishment of the clubhouse and terrace, and the installation of new stands. There would also be a fans’ zone which would provide entertainment before and after matches.
Phase two would see the installation of a state-of-the-art training facility, including gym and office space, plus a training barn. As part of Ospreys’ ambition to make St Helen’s the hub of the community, the barn will also be available for community use. This will not only help nurture local talent, but also give back to the local community.
It is anticipated that work on site would start soon after the 2025 cricket season.
Keith Colclough, Managing Director, Swansea RFC, believes the impending redevelopment of the All Whites iconic home was something that everybody at the club should be excited about.
“This is fantastic news, not only for Swansea RFC and our supporters, but for the wider rugby community in the city” he said.
“The proposed redevelopment will create a modern facility that can become a real community hub with rugby activity throughout the week. The Ospreys have been brilliant in terms of engaging with us as a club and we are working together in partnership to ensure the ‘new’ St Helen’s is something we can all be proud of, a ‘home’ for both clubs that both looks forward and, importantly, honours the fantastic history that we have here. We are grateful to Lance and his team at the Ospreys, and to council leader Rob Stewart and his colleagues for enabling this to get to this stage.
“We recently celebrated our 150th anniversary as a club, with the highlight being a full house in the sunshine for the game against Barbarians. Next year, 2026, will mark 150 years of St Helen’s as our home, so there couldn’t be a better time for the venue to get a complete makeover, giving us a sports stadium suitable for the modern era and securing our future at St Helen’s for many years to come.”
Lance Bradley, CEO, Ospreys Rugby, said:
“Ospreys have always enjoyed a close relationship with Swansea RFC, and our move to St Helen’s will further strengthen this relationship. The investment in the ground will be of huge benefit to both clubs, as well as to the wider community. We feel privileged to be joining Swansea RFC in calling such an iconic ground our home.”
All Whites Supporters have the opportunity to hear from Lance, along with Keith Colclough, Swansea RFC Managing Director,, and to ask any questions they may have about the redevelopment, ahead of the Super Rygbi Cymru clash with Carmarthen Quins at St Helen’s on Friday 7th February, from 6.30pm. The session will be held in the St Helen’s Lounge, with access to all ticket holders on a first come, first served basis.
