Glyn ‘Shorty’ Davies, a tall, red-head, was picked to play against NZ in 1953, but was forced to drop out and Sid Judd replaced him. He had played against the tourists as captain of England’s Southern Counties and played for the same combination against Australia in 1957. He was educated at Lewis School, Pengam, Bedwellty Grammar School and Cardiff University (where he studied French), playing just briefly for Blackwood and Cross Keys before Blackheath (1952-53), London Welsh and Sussex. He was a language master at several schools in Sussex and Manchester and then a director of the 3M Company in Gorseinon, Swansea, being an international at Basketball and heavyweight boxing champion of the Welsh Universities. His playing career at Swansea spanned the 1956-57 and 1957-58 seasons during which he played 36 times in the 1st XV scoring 4 tries. He played against Ranji Walkers' select XV both seasons and for Swansea against Italy in 1956 and the Barbarians later that season, scoring a try. His single cap for Wales was gained against England on 22 January 1955 in the 3 - 0 Welsh win in the Cardiff mud, when he was a London Welsh player. He lives at Isfield, near Lichfield in East Sussex.
Swansea RFC is grateful for the contribution of rugby historian Howard Evans in the compiling of this player profile.
