View from the pew Captain Kiley is Sam the man19 Sep 2009

Last season saw Sam Kiley play more games than anyone else in the squad. His consistent performances from number 6 marked him out as a quality player at the top of his game. This season this likeable and talented young man has been given even more responsibility by being made captain. I caught up with Sam before training to see how was getting on.

How do you feel about your appointment as club captain ?
It is a huge privilege to lead a great bunch of boys and the club itself.
After playing most of your rugby in the back row you have played second row so far this season, how do you feel about that ?
I must have done something wrong in pre-season to be stuck in there ! Seriously I’ll play anywhere to help the team.
What is your assessment of the club’s great start to the season ?
The performances have been very pleasing but I still think there is more to come from this team. I’m glad that we are starting to gel as a team.
Who has impressed you so far this season ?
Nicky Thomas has been on fire and Luke Jones looks a good signing.
What are your personal targets for this season ?
Take each game as it comes ! It would be great to stay injury free.
What were thoughts on the pre-season ?
It was different from previous years we started the physical/contact work much earlier. The trial match went well and was helpful in identifying some lads who could step up in the future. The Narberth game helped identify areas we needed to work on. The Nuneaton game was tough they were confident after being promoted last year but we showed good patience and skill levels. We gradually built our patterns and gelled as a team during pre season.
What did you note about all the rugby that went on over the summer ?
It was great to see Richard Kelly going so well for the Ospreys pre season.
Who would be your tip for the top this season ?
Nicky Thomas if he keeps his form and plays to his potential he has got to be in with a shout.
Would you have made any changes to this season’s Premiership ?
I’d have formed a separate over 30’s veteran’s league for the old men like Rhys Jones and Bonk (Andrew Joy) to excel in !
What are your thoughts on today’s game ?
It is always a great event to be part of as both teams want to play rugby.

Today’s game sees us launch this season’s charity with a bucket collection. Please give generously. This season’s chosen charities are Josh and Jade our own office angel Sarah’s kids representing The Swansea Gladiators ( A team for able bodied and disabled children to play rugby together) and Nicholas our legendary gateman Eddie’s great grandson representing The Hemophilia Society ( a charity who work with those who suffer from this blood disorder )

In welcoming Llanelli to St Helens, can I add my welcome to their long standing chaplain the Rev Eldon Phillips.

Congratulations to Nicky Thomas on reaching the milestone of 100 games in next weeks VFTP we can hear all about his views on life and rugby.
