Caerphilly 3 v 69 Whites
16 Jan 2010 - St Helen's
Swansea eased into the third round of the Swalec Cup with a convincing 69-3 win over Division One side Caerphilly. The All Whites scored eleven tries while the visitors’ only reply was a Dean Watkins penalty goal. Centre David Watts was the star of the show, scoring a try and creating several others with his intelligent play in midfield.
The home side opened the scoring after just three minute when Adrian Thomas broke through the middle and found Leigh Bevan who raced in under the posts. James Dixon converted. Caerphilly hit back with a Watkins penalty goal after Adrian Thomas held on in the tackle.
After a promising attack orchestrated by David Blyth, the visitors’ centre Mark Addis intercepted a loose pass and raced down the wing only for his chip through to bounce out of play. Andrew Joy was then driven over for Swansea’s second try which was also converted by Dixon.
The pick of the home tries came on 22 minutes when a delightful move involving Chris Shelmerdine and Hanno Dirksen resulted in Dixon racing in to score from his own twenty-two. He missed the conversion. Phillip Tucker was next on the score sheet after Watts was initially held up only for the scrum half to be driven over during the next phase. Dixon converted. A strong break by Watts set up Swansea’s next try as the centre found Dirksen who used a combination of pace and power to race in from half way. Dixon converted.

The Whites’ began the second half as they began the first with Ben Lewis beating his man on the wing and chipping over for the grateful Bevan to score. Dixon’s conversion attempt sailed wide. Blyth was given the game’s first yellow card for persistent offside.
A period of pressure by Caerphilly almost resulted in a try for Adam Minty but the Whites managed to turn over possession and cleared. Two minutes later Shelmerdine scored in the corner after a scintillating break by Bevan sent him over. Dixon missed the conversion.
Bevan almost scored another try in the corner but replacement Matthew Minty got to the ball first and hacked it dead for a twenty-two drop out. Shelmerdine scored the next try after a burst through the middle by Watts and a charge by Lee May saw the centre pounce on a loose ball and slide over the try line. Dixon converted.
Blyth was the next to score after Watts and Marc Popham helped beat the first line of defence before the flanker went over for a try. Dixon’s conversion was successful. Rhodri Wells superbly kept hold of possession on the back foot and was supported by Popham, who fired a scoring pass to Watts. Dixon converted from in front of the posts. Tim Evans had the final say by crashing over for a try after a good build up involving Sam Lewis, Watts and Blyth. Dixon pulled his conversion wide.
Swansea now face an away tie at either Felinfoel or Pontypridd in the cup and their next league game is at home to Llandovery while Caerphilly travel to Ystrad Rhondda.
