Frank Purdon

Frank Purdon

Position: Forward

Place Of Birth County Westmeath

Frank T Purdon was born in Ireland on 8th November 1857 in County Westmeath and was a relative of two Purdons who played for Ireland. An acomplished cricketer, he trialled for the South Wales Cricket Club, forerunner to Glamorgan CC. A Clerk by profession, Frank Purdon joined George Morris as Swansea players in the Wales team for the 3rd international (versus England 16 December 1882). He had actually played for Wales in their first 2 internationals but as a Newport player before transferring to Swansea in 1882.
Purdon joined Newport in 1880. He first played for Swansea in October of 1882, possibly on loan as he continued his career with Newport during the 1882-83 season before work comittments caused his move to Swansea. He returned to play games on permit for Newport (along with Swansea forward Sam Goldsworthy) in 1883. He had played mainly as a half-back for Newport but played as a forward for Wales (and Swansea) in his 4 international appearances from 1881 to 1883. He was uncle to later Welsh International W P Green of Newport.

There has always been confusion about the Wales v Ireland match of 1884 played in Cardiff. certainly, not all the Irish team arrived and played. It's believed two 'Welsh' players made up the numbers and one of these was Frank purdon (some sources name Newport's J. McDaniel). If so, Purdon became the only player to have played for Wales against Ireland (1882) and for Ireland against Wales.

Apart for Newport and Swansea, Purdon also played for Irish Wanderers in his earlier career and later for Machen and Abergavenny in Wales.

Frank Purdon set sail on a passanger ship on Dcember 4th 1886 to the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. After 140 days, the ship was reported as lost at sea with all hands and passangers lost.
