Swansea forward David Jenkins was a loser in both of his international appearances, which were gained some two years apart, though he was also selected to play against Scotland in 1929, but by then he had changed codes. Before being capped he had played in the Swansea pack against the Maoris in 1926 and the Waratahs in 1927, having previously played for both Resolven and Neath. Two weeks after being capped against England at Twickenham in 1929 he ran out for Leeds Rugby League club having received £370 signing-on fee and he soon played for Great Britain in a test against Australia. David’s uncle was the legendary ‘Dai St John’, who was a heavyweight boxer who became famous for killing Zulus in the Boer war, but while serving in the Grenadier Guards at the Battle of Belmont in 1899, he was shot and killed by a Zulu. David lived at 2 Yeo Street in Resolven in his early years with his parents Walter, a surface labourer, and Mary, plus three sisters. He was only 47 when he died in the North-East of England. His son, David Jr, was born in Treherbert and played Rugby Union for Cardiff (17 games), then Rugby League for Acton and Willesden, Streatham and Mitcham, Hunslet, as well as Leeds, for whom he made 292 appearances scoring 55 tries and making 17 appearances for Wales RL plus one for Great Britain in 1947. He also toured with the British team to Australasia in 1946 and finished his career by appearing for Keighley and Bramley. In 1939, though still stating he was a Rugby League player, he was keeping a Licensed Public House at 80 Pemberton Terrace, Leeds with his wife Ada (born 1896).
