FORMER HON. SEC. DAVID PRICE PASSES ON

By Phil Llewellyn, Chairman Swansea RFC | 03/08/2012

It is with great regret and sadness that the club has to announce the passing of David Price in the early hours of this morning.

Postscript: David Price's funeral service will be held at EBENEZER CHURCH, HENRIETTA STREET, SWANSEA at 11.00, following to MORRISTON CREMATORIUM at 12.30

Well known to all at St Helens and in the greater rugby world beyond, Mr  David Phillip Price has spent a lifetime in the service of the Swansea Rugby Football Club. Educated at Swansea Grammar School and the University College of Wales, he represented Devonport services, the University of Wales, and the Universities Athletic Union and first represented Swansea in the 1948/49 season whilst a student at University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. He appeared 22 times for the first XV and on numerous occasions for the Athletic XV, mainly during vacations. He once scored a ‘hat trick’ of tries against a visiting Aberavon XV.

Succeeding Cliff Prosser as Swansea’s 7th Hon. Secretary in 1955, he served until 1992, a length of time which speaks for itself as to the respect he was held in at the club. He was elected club President in 1992 and became a Life Patron. He was a former headmaster and local magistrate (Ex Thusday Bench Chairman and Magistrate from 1973).

His encyclopaedic knowledge of the rugby world and its players, officials and milestone events is evidence of how his life was steeped in the Cricket and rugby traditions he loved and served so well. His loss will be keenly felt in the wider rugby community around the world and especially at St Helens where the club's sympathies go out to his widow Mrs Margaret Price and family.

Phil Llewellyn (Chairman Swansea Rugby Football Clb).
