Pete Orphan on this season's "Chosen Charity"

By Dave Dow | 01/10/2011

With a run of home games I thought I would use this weeks VFTP to update you on the chosen charity for this season. Of the many great local causes we could have chosen from the boys decided at a pre season team meeting to back the Rhodri Jones Memorial Fund. It is a charity set up by Rhodri’s parents to raise money for research into the rare form of cancer that sadly took Rhodri’s life at the age of 19. Rhodri moving story can be found on the website www.bcrt.org/mbcs_my_story.php.

Rhodri was a keen sportsman and was known to number of the squad personally having played for local rugby club Waunarlwydd RFC. This years charity will not only raise money for a great cause helping to keep Rhodri memory alive, but also strength the good ties as a club we have Waunarlwydd. During this pre season some the Swansea squad and coaches took a training session for youngsters there. The possibilities of a charity game between the two clubs this season has been floated as a fundraising idea.

Fundraising has of course already started with last weeks bucket collection at our home game against Aberavon. We hope to announce the total raised last week at today’s game. I’m currently collecting in sponsorship money having run the Swansea Bay 10k last Sunday. Finishing in a time under the hour but not troubling the Kenyan winner or course record ! Plans are being made for our annual Christmas Carol service where we take up a collection for the charity. Any new ideas or help is always welcome on the fundraising front. VFTP will keep you informed. But as always I thank you for your generosity which says something about the nature of the club we all love and support. I also want to thank the club for their continued support even in these difficult financial times, Dave Dow and Sarah Standen for their continuing help.

One final bit of good news after we presented last years charity recipients the Stepping Stones Children Centre with their cheque at our first home game, some more came in for them, so the final total we were able to hand over was £1213.84. We received their warm thanks which I pass on to you.

It has been a difficult and frustrating start to the season on the field. But I can assure you Jason, Damien, all the coaching staff and the players are putting in huge efforts to turn narrow defeats into victories. Let’s get behind the boys today and make sure they know we are behind them as they look to turn things around on the pitch.

Enjoy the game

Rev Pete
