Match Report

Aberavon 43 Swansea 16

Swansea fell to a disappointing loss to an impressive Aberavon side at a sunny Talbot Athletic Ground.

The Wizards’ fly half Jamie Davies got his side’s first points with a penalty goal when powerful drives by Lee Purnell and Rhydian Gierat forced the visitors’ defence to dive over the top of the ruck.

Cameron Clement tied up the scores with a penalty of his own when the Wizards’ defence piled over the top.

Flanker Rob Dudley Jones superbly ripped the ball from a tackle, but a chip to the corner by Clement evaded the chasing Andrew Claypole to roll dead.

Whites number eight Dan Baker picked up a loose ball inside the Wizards’ twenty-two and raced towards the line, but he was held up by a scrambling defence.

A quick lineout by the home side saw number eight Ben Thomas and full back John Phillips make breaks, forcing the Swansea defence to kill the ball. Jamie Davies kicked the penalty goal.

A powerful drive by the Wizards’ pack took possession well into the twenty-two and the Whites’ defence entered a maul offside. Jamie Davies kicked the resulting penalty.

A superb break by Jake Cole caught the Aberavon defence asleep and he fired out a pass out wide for Claypole to score. Clement missed the conversion attempt.

The Wizards scored their first try from a fluid move by the backs with flanker Nathan Brown making the initial break before Phillips drew in the tackler and handed a scoring pass to Richard Carter. Replacement fly half Craig Evans converted.

Phillips hacked forward a loose ball and the scrambling Whites defence killed the ball. Moments later flanker James Bija was yellow carded for a similar offence and the home side opted for a scrum five. Then scrum half David Pritchard swept the ball quickly out wide for Carter to score his second try.

Half-time:-   Aberavon   23   Swansea   8

Swansea began the second half on the front foot with prop Nicky Smith creating a platform for Clement to successfully kick a drop goal.

The home side hit back immediately though when the forwards rumbled towards the line, before centre Matthew Jenkins stretched over the line to score. Evans pulled his conversion attempt wide of the post.

Aberavon threw away a simple try scoring opportunity when Pritchard’s pass to winger Howard Thomas sailed into touch.

A good run by Richard Thomas forced the All Whites’ forwards to dive over the top of a ruck. Evans kicked the penalty goal to take his side into a 20 point lead.

The moment of the match came on the 68th minute when Dudley-Jones took a pass inside his own twenty-two before showing a superb turn of pace to outpace Phillips to score in the corner. Clement missed the conversion.

The home side refused to open the door for the Whites and secured a bonus point with seven minutes left on the clock. Pritchard made a break and linked up with Jenkins, who fired a pass out to Richard Thomas for the centre to finish off in the corner. Evans converted.

Ben Thomas rounded off a comprehensive victory for Aberavon after replacements Evan Yardley, Anthony Edwards and Chris Davies combined in midfield to allow the number eight to score in the corner. Evans missed the conversion.

Next up for Aberavon is a trip to Llandovery, while Swansea host Cardiff in their final game of the season.
