Match Report

Swansea 13 Pontypridd 36

League leaders Pontypridd put bottom side Swansea to the sword with a comfortable bonus point victory that never looked in doubt.

It was a bright start for the visitors when prop Chris Phillips and lock Chris Dicomidis linked up in midfield before centre Gavin Dacey failed to take a pass inside the Whites’ twenty-two.

The home side should have taken the lead on nine minutes after a good build up by the forwards saw Cameron Clement chip through only for the chasing Aled Jenkins to lose the ball forward over the line.

Pontypridd took the lead on 15 minutes when replacement hooker Huw Dowden charged through the middle to set up an attack. The backs then got the ball quickly out wide for Dacey to score. Simon Humberstone missed the conversion.

Clement had a chance to get three points on the board for his side after hands in the ruck by the Pontypridd forwards, but his attempt sailed well wide of the posts.

The visitors’ defence drove Jenkins backwards with a big hit but overzealous play saw them pile over the top of a maul and give away a penalty. However Clement again missed his attempt at goal.

Whites full back Richard Williams did well to save a certain try when Dicomidis hacked forward a loose ball into the twenty-two. Swansea did finally get their first points with a Clement penalty goal when the visitors crept offside at the breakdown.

Dicomidis and flanker Rhys Shellard linked up superbly in midfield showing some great handling skills but the ball was spilled forward on the line. Dowden was then held up over the line as Pontypridd piled on the pressure.

The visitors’ second try finally came a minute before the break when the pack drove their Swansea counterparts off the ball before second row Craig Locke picked up and drove over the line. Humberstone converted.

Half-time:-   Swansea   3   Pontypridd   12

Pontypridd stretched their lead to 12 points when the Swansea defence stepped offside. Humberstone kicked the penalty goal.  A couple of minutes later replacement full back Nicky Thomas cancelled out the penalty with one of his own after Pontypridd were caught offside in midfield.

The visitors responded immediately though when Dacey made a break through the middle and threw a pass out wide for Dowden to score a well taken try. Humberstone converted.

When Swansea collapsed a scrum Humberstone opted to kick to the corner but Whites replacement Jon Barley crucially stole the lineout. Centre Gary Williams then burst through the middle, leaving the Whites defence behind, to score a great solo try. Humberstone converted.

Four minutes later the visitors got their fifth try when the pack drove up to the line with Phillips claiming the score. Humberstone converted.

It was the All Whites who had the final say when pacey winger Rhys Williams picked up a loose ball inside his own twenty-two and beat four defenders to score a fantastic try. Thomas converted.
