Match Report

Cardiff 23 Swansea 15

By: Paul Hopkins

Cardiff condemned the All Whites to a fifth defeat of the season with a comfortable 23-15 win in a game littered with mistakes from both sides.

The visitors threatened to turn the form book on its head early on when winger Richard Williams showed great strength and pace to hold off two tacklers before scoring in the corner. Nicky J Thomas missed the conversion.

It took the Blue and Blacks just five minutes to reply though when scrum half Alex Walker made a superb break through the middle before flanker Thomas Young did the rest. Joe Griffin converted.

Number eight Dan Baker began a promising attack for the visitors, with Nicky J Thomas and Nicky Harwood linking up well in midfield, but the ball was spilled forward at the crucial moment.

Luke Hamilton came agonisingly close to scoring in the corner after quick ball from full back Sion Hopkins, but the back row man lost possession forward under pressure when trying to ground it.

It didn’t make much difference though as less than a minute later the home side took a quick free kick five metres from the line and used their backs to fashion a try out wide for winger Shaun Powell. Griffin missed the conversion.

Nicky J Thomas was handed an opportunity to cut the deficit after Aled Jenkins was taken out off the ball but his penalty goal effort sailed wide of the posts. Instead it was Griffin who extended Cardiff’s lead with a successful penalty goal of his own after Sam Lewis was penalised for offside.

Half-time:-   Cardiff   15   Swansea   5

The early part of the second half was a scrappy affair with both sides taking it in turns to lose possession. It took a moment of brilliance from Griffin to get his side a third try when he picked up loose possession and raced through the Whites defence unopposed to score in the corner. His conversion attempt fell short of the posts.

The impressive lock Macauley Cook almost scored a magical try when he raced down the wing and chipped over the top, but Nicky J Thomas marshalled the ball dead. The Whites full back brought his side back to within two scores with a successful penalty kick after the Cardiff backs were caught offside in midfield.

The home side restored their 15 point advantage midway through the second half with a Griffin penalty after the Whites were caught offside in midfield. Swansea made sure their opponents were not able to stroll to victory with Sam Lewis crashing over from close range after Harwood cut through the defence and took play up to the line. Nicky J Thomas converted.

Richard Williams almost brought his side back into contention after excellent work up front by Sam Lewis and Sion Williams, but the winger was tackled short of the line. It was Cardiff who ended the game the better side as they went in search of a bonus point and Cory Allen had the best chance but was adjudged to be offside.

Next up for Cardiff is a trip to Cross Keys while Swansea travel to champions Pontypridd.
