An inspired display by the All Whites’ pack was enough to clinch a comfortable win over fellow regional side Bridgend at St Helen’s.
The signs looked bad for the home side when winger Rhys Williams crossed for the opening try after only seven minutes and the visitors were eight points to the good soon after when Swansea were penalised for back chat.
When Steffan Jones was yellow carded for a punch Dai Flanagan should have put his side further ahead but he scuffed his attempt at the posts. The Whites finished on top before the interval with James Dixon kicking a penalty goal after a good run by Andrew Gwynne forced the visitors offside.
It took the home side just four minutes after the break to get their opening try when a powerful surge forward by the pack saw captain Sam Kiley pick up and score from close range.
Dixon extended the lead to five points but the visitors hit back when Jonathan Thomas set up a platform for Tom Isaacs to stroll over for a try. Ben Davies was yellow carded for diving over the top of a ruck but both sides were down to 14 men moments later when Dan Griffiths was sent to the sin-bin for killing a dangerous Whites attack.
The Swansea pack began to dominant and earned a series of penalties from collapsed scrums near the try line before referee Gareth Butler was left with little option but to award a penalty try.
Gwynne was a constant thorn in the side and when he peeled off a five metre scrum Ben Davies was on hand to seal a deserved victory for the Whites with a well taken try.
