Match Report

Bedwas 15 Swansea 13

Fly half Richard Powell was the hero of the hour as he kept his nerve to slot over a difficult last gasp touchline penalty goal to clinch victory for Bedwas at a rain soaked Bridge Field.

It was the perfect start for the All Whites when lock Richard Kelly made a mini break from a lineout for the supporting Ben Davies to crash over for a second minute try. James Dixon converted. Moments later Bedwas fly half Richard Powell kicked a penalty from inside his own half after the visitors killed the ball.

Obstruction in the lineout gifted Powell another three points and the fly half kicked his side into the lead after Swansea were penalised for a high tackle.

Powell missed his fourth attempt at goal when the visitors’ failed to bind properly at the scrum. However when the Swansea pack were driven backwards in a rolling maul Powell made them pay for failing to release in the tackle with a successful penalty goal.

Offside in midfield gave Powell another opportunity at goal, from half way, but this time he missed. Full back Nicky Thomas had a late chance to cut the deficit with a penalty of his own but his effort drifted wide of the post.

Half-time:-   Bedwas   12   Swansea   7

After a fairly muted start to the second half Dixon cut the gap to two points when the Bedwas forwards piled into a ruck from the wrong side. Dixon failed to give his side the lead with a penalty mid way through the second half when the touch judge spotted a late tackle.

When the Bedwas pack failed to bind at the scrum Tom Prydie stepped up for a shot at goal but his effort was wide. Inside the final ten minutes Bedwas lock Gareth Williams was yellow carded for persistent offside and Thomas made his side pay with a penalty goal.

Thomas could have put matters beyond doubt but he missed a drop goal after the Whites stole a lineout. However it was man of the match Powell who had the final say when he kept his nerve to kick his side to victory with the final play of the game.

Next up for Bedwas is a home match against Cross Keys while Swansea entertain Neath.
