Match Report

Carmarthen 7 Swansea 0

The Whites opened their 2011/12 league campaign with a bitterly disappointing defeat at Carmarthen. The match was played in torrential rain and the only points came courtesy of a Gareth Morgan try and James Stephenson conversion on the 23 minute mark.

It was the home side who began the brighter and winger Viv Jenkins could have scored inside five minutes after breaking through the first line of defence but James Dixon bundled him into touch on the twenty-two. A further attack orchestrated by Tal Selley and Andrew Thomas almost saw flanker Stuart Phillips dive over but he lost the ball forward.

Chris Shelmerdine showed good pace to sprint from his own twenty-two and he chipped forward for Dixon to chase only for the supporting forwards to pile over the top of the ruck. Immense pressure on the Whites' line soon told when Selley cut through midfield to send Morgan over for a try. Stephenson converted.

A half break by Rhodri Wells was supported by Richard Kelly but his pass to James Bija drifted forward and a promising move broke down. The visitors earned a scrum five towards the end of the first half after a clever chip through by Sam Davies but Shelmerdine was then ushered into touch on the wing.

Half-time:- Carmarthen 7 Swansea 0

The All Whites signalled their intent after the interval and a patient build up involving Kelly and Roy Jones set up an attack but Sam Davies missed with a surprise drop goal attempt.

Half breaks by Craig Everett and captain Ian Jones forced the Swansea defence offside in midfield. Morgan chipped to touch from the penalty and Jenkins almost squeezed over in the corner only to bump into his own man.

Stephenson almost added a second try in the corner but he was tackled into touch by the covering Whites defence. The visitors almost snatched a late draw when replacement Ryan Michael raced through midfield but heroic defence by Carmarthen ensured they came out on top.

Next up for Swansea is a home match against Bedwas, while Carmarthen travel to Neath.
